How to Grow Green Onion (Scallion) Indoors

Regrows from the white root ends you'd normally toss — onions carry the same beneficial sulfur compounds and antioxidants as their bulbs.

Difficulty: BeginnerReady in ~7–10 daysLight: Bright sillYou'll need: A glass of water, then a pot

How to grow it

  1. Save the white root ends (about an inch) from store-bought green onions.
  2. Stand them root-down in a shallow glass with just enough water to cover the roots.
  3. Set on a bright windowsill and change the water every day or two.
  4. Snip the green tops as they regrow; pot them in soil to keep them going long term.

Pro tip

After a couple of regrows in water, move them to soil for stronger, longer-lasting growth.
