How to Grow Thyme Indoors

A tiny-leaved antiseptic herb whose thymol oil has a long history of soothing coughs.

Difficulty: ModerateReady in 6+ wksLight: Bright, dryYou'll need: Pot with drainage

How to grow it

  1. Start from a cutting or small plant — seed is slow.
  2. Give it the brightest, airiest spot and a free-draining pot.
  3. Let the soil dry well between waterings; thyme hates wet feet.
  4. Snip sprigs as needed, never taking more than a third at once.

Pro tip

When unsure, water less — thyme would rather be too dry than too wet.
